A year after your Maryland medical marijuana card has been issued; you will be required by the state to do a Maryland medical cannabis card renewal certification. In this blog we are going to focus on the process to help make your renewal as smooth as possible. If you need a hand or you are ready to renew, call us today.

Schedule A Medical Card Renewal

The first step in ensuring that you do not risk having your medical cannabis card expire is to schedule an appointment with a certifying provider. At this point it is likely that you have received an email both from the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission and your marijuana doctor letting you know that it is time for a renewal. It is not something to take lightly as many have found out because your certification is only good for 365 days.

The Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission has a very sophisticated tracking system of medical certifications. You will find out that after those 365 days you will go to a dispensary in an attempt to purchase your normal products and you will learn that they are not allowed by law to sell to you.

Fill Out Cannabis Card Renewal Information

After you have booked an appointment for renewal, you will likely need to fill out some renewal information for your medical marijuana doctor.  Any good doctor or provider should be keeping track of your condition. This information is not just to approve or deny a Maryland medical cannabis card renewal. You may not be aware, but a Maryland marijuana certifying provider can also adjust your dosage amount. If you have a condition that has gotten worse your doctor or provider should know this because you may be eligible to get larger quantities of THC products from the dispensary to help with your condition.

A provider will need this information to be completed they can complete your medical marijuana card renewal. If you do not get a chance to do it before your appointment, any good doctor’s office should have the paperwork available for you to fill it out in their office.

Log In To Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission

At some point before your appointment, you are going to need to log in to the Maryland Medical Cannabis. To do that, log into the patient portal on the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission. You are going to need to do this for two reasons. The first is just to make sure you still have your password and username available for the renewal process. Do not worry if you have forgotten your password. You can reset the password if necessary, to get into your account.

The second reason is just as practical as the first. You want to just do a quick check with your registration to make sure there are no problems. Typically, there are not any problems with your registration and you simply need a renewal, however, it is always good to check this first before your appointment so that you or your provider can work on helping you get them resolved before you arrive for your recertification.

What You Need To Bring To Your Maryland Medical Cannabis Renewal

There are a few things you will need to bring with you for your medical cannabis card recertification. If you are going to a new doctor or provider’s office, you will need to make sure they either already have or that you bring with you your medical records. These could include doctor’s notes, medical histories, prescriptions, or anything else that can establish your medical condition. If you are returning to the same doctor that you have gone to before to get your Maryland medical cannabis certification, then it is likely they will already have your records and not need anything else, but it still does not hurt just to check.

In addition to your medical records, you will also need to bring a form of identification with you to establish that you are a Maryland resident. This can be a driver’s license or state ID, military ID, or several other types of identification which we have highlighted in a previous post that you should look at.

Your Maryland medical cannabis card renewal appointment will also need you to bring with you your state ID number that is issued by the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission. This number is essential to your marijuana doctor or provider being able to recertify you and without it the appointment will not be able to move forward.

Get Your New Medical Marijuana Card

After your appointment, you will be able to immediately go any purchase medical cannabis at any dispensary you would like. If you still have an ID card that has not expired from the state than you will not need or be getting anything else in the mail.

A few years ago, Maryland changed the law which requires you to have a physical ID card from the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission. The physical card is good for three years, but the law requires that a recertification occurs with a doctor every year to continue using the card. We know this is confusing and causes some patients to go past their renewal date and not realize it. If your card itself has not expired than you will not receive anything else from the state. If it has expired you can expect to receive a new one in the mail, but in the meantime you will still be able to purchase medical cannabis with the paperwork that your doctor or provider gives you at the recertification appointment.

We recognize that this entire process can be extremely confusing.
